Direct Current Technologies: A Pivotal Role in Future Power Systems

A newly published report by ABB and Boston Consulting Group emphasizes the growing significance of direct current (DC) technologies in upcoming power systems. With the rapid expansion of AI computing, increasing electrification, and a surge in renewable energy, there's renewed interest in integrating DC technology into future electrical systems. The report suggests that both AC and DC systems hold crucial roles in addressing future electricity demands.

According to the report, the future of power distribution will not solely rely on AC. DC technology is gaining prominence, especially in facilities where major energy sources operate natively on direct current. As renewable technologies like solar systems and electric vehicles scale, minimizing power conversion steps could significantly enhance efficiency and support grid integration.

Data centers, driven by AI workloads, are identified as key drivers for DC adoption. The report highlights 800 VDC distribution as a fundamental architecture for future AI infrastructures, enhancing energy efficiency and compute capacity. Moreover, other sectors such as manufacturing and commercial buildings could benefit from DC systems through reduced conversion losses and better integration of renewables.

ABB CEO Morten Wierod states that for widespread DC adoption, stronger collaboration among industry leaders, policymakers, and technology stakeholders is essential. The companies also stress the need for common standards and DC-specific skills to support large-scale implementation. Addressing misconceptions about DC safety and economics, the report calls for urgent action on fragmented standards to accelerate the deployment of DC technologies.
