African Leaders Urge Sustainable Malaria Financing Amid Funding Crisis

The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) has issued a call for sustainable financing at the 39th African Union Summit in Ethiopia. The 2025 Africa Malaria Progress Report highlights stalled progress, with 270.8 million cases and nearly 600,000 deaths occurring in 2024. African leaders are urging increased domestic fundraising, development of national health plans, and renewed international support. Without urgent action, malaria cases could surge to over 400 million per year, potentially reversing decades of advancements.

Declines in international funding have exacerbated the situation, with the Global Fund falling short of its $18 billion target. In response, African nations are bolstering domestic investment and creating public-private partnerships. The report highlights innovation, showing 74% of distributed nets featuring advanced technology, and 28.3 million doses of vaccines administered in 2025. Leaders emphasize local manufacturing for supply chain resilience and urge international partners to honor commitments.
