Study Reveals Cost Benefits of Combined ESR and CRP Testing

A recent study sponsored by ALCOR Scientific suggests that using both erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) tests could save hospitals millions annually. The research, published in ClinicoEconomics and Outcomes Research, indicates that the combined testing strategy reduces misdiagnoses and lowers overall healthcare costs compared to using CRP alone.

The study, which analyzed data from a representative 739-bed medical center in the US, projects possible savings of $9.95 million per year. These savings come from reducing unnecessary follow-up procedures due to false-positive results when only CRP testing is used.

While some criticize the redundancy of using both tests, the study highlights the different kinetics of CRP and ESR. CRP reacts quickly to inflammation, whereas ESR remains elevated for longer, providing valuable data for diagnosing chronic conditions. Both tests, when used together, are described as cost-effective, especially considering the automated, low-cost nature of modern ESR testing.
