Customs opportunities between Switzerland and the United States: towards the abolition of the car tax

The agreement in principle between Switzerland and the United States, aimed at significantly reducing tariffs, represents a notable step forward for bilateral trade. Auto-suisse, the Swiss Association of Automobile Importers, encourages the Swiss Confederation to abolish the car tax, a 4% levy on the import of new cars, which is considered outdated and detrimental to competitiveness.

With this agreement, Switzerland is also invited to remove non-tariff barriers for American products, including cars. Auto-suisse emphasizes the importance of uniform safety standards to avoid any distortion of competition between manufacturers, regardless of their country of origin.
