The EU Promotes Zero Emission Utility Vehicles
The European Parliament recently adopted measures to encourage the adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. Eco-friendly trucks and buses could be exempt from tolls or benefit from reduced rates until June 30, 2031. Simultaneously, the EU adjusted CO₂ credit rules to allow manufacturers to accumulate carry-forward credits, making it easier to meet their emissions targets. This strategy aims to harmonize climate policy with economic realities while incentivizing investment in sustainable vehicles.
In contrast, Switzerland, despite its leading position in Europe with a 22% registration rate of electric trucks, is hesitant to adopt this more flexible approach. Swiss importers believe that rigid regulations could stifle local innovation. Thomas Rücker of auto-suisse emphasizes the need for an adaptable regulatory framework to maintain momentum in the transformation of commercial vehicles.
