CorTec's Brain Interchange™ System Achieves Thought-Controlled Computer Use
CorTec GmbH has announced a breakthrough in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, where a stroke patient successfully controlled a computer using only his thoughts. This milestone was achieved as part of a clinical trial at the University of Washington, funded by the NIH. The patient managed to control a video game using the Brain Interchange™ BCI system, which is the first fully implanted, wireless system to offer both therapeutic stroke rehabilitation and thought-based computer control with no additional hardware alterations.
The participant's cortical activity was recorded and wirelessly transmitted to an external computer for decoding into control commands. This demonstration occurred post-rehabilitation, nine months following device implantation. CorTec's system, known for its long-term neural sensing and safe non-invasive placement, signifies progress in BCI applications for various neurological conditions.
