EDF Sets EPR2 Programme Cost at €72.8 Billion

EDF has disclosed its estimated budget for the EPR2 nuclear reactor programme, amounting to €72.8 billion. This initiative involves constructing six reactors across Penly, Gravelines, and Bugey sites in France. The French Interministerial Delegation for New Nuclear will audit the estimate in early 2026. For the upcoming year, the board has approved a €2.7 billion allocation for the project.

The programme, backed by State-support measures, includes a subsidised loan covering at least half of the construction cost and a 40-year contract for difference. The first reactor at Penly is projected to begin operations by 2038. Additional reactors are set to follow at 12 to 18-month intervals. Final investment decision is anticipated in late 2026.

EDF CEO Bernard Fontana affirmed the programme's commitment to controlling costs and timelines, highlighting its importance for energy transition in France.
