2026 Semmelweis-Richter Journalism Award Winners Announced

In Budapest, the Semmelweis University, in partnership with Gedeon Richter, has awarded the distinguished Semmelweis-Richter Journalism Award for outstanding health and science journalism in Europe. The awards honored six entries in the "Women's Health" and "Pharmaceutical Strategies and Innovation" categories. The first prizes were given to an investigative project on abortion and an article about organ-mimicking technology. Over 60 entries were submitted from nearly 20 countries.

The competition has become a platform for major media outlets like The Guardian and Financial Times to showcase significant journalism. Topics covered include climate change's effect on pregnancy, AI in healthcare, and risks of synthetic organisms. Notably, the first prize in "Women's Health" was for a project on European abortion access barriers, coordinated by Spanish journalists.

In "Pharmaceutical Strategies," the first prize went to Vito Tartamella of Focus for his piece on organ-on-a-chip technology, promising advances in drug development. An international jury, alongside members like Gábor Orbán of Gedeon Richter, evaluated submissions. The total prize fund is EUR 45,000, with the winners to be celebrated on November 26 in Budapest.
