GSMA Targets Six African Nations for Affordable Smartphone Initiative

The GSMA, alongside the Handset Affordability Coalition, has announced plans to pilot affordable 4G smartphones in six African nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. This move aims to tackle the significant mobile internet usage gap on the continent.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the GSMA, G6 African operators, and OEMs was formalized to introduce entry-level 4G smartphones, furthering digital inclusion efforts. However, rising memory costs challenge the target price range of $30-$40 for these devices. In response, the GSMA emphasizes the need to reduce taxes on these smartphones to achieve affordability.

Director General Vivek Badrinath stresses the role of affordable smartphones in driving digital and economic opportunities. The initiative also aligns with efforts to enhance local AI capabilities, as showcased in the upcoming Africa Pavilion at MWC26.
