HRS Initiates First Hydrogen-Based Energy Backup Solution
On May 21, 2026, HRS announced the commencement of manufacturing its first Secure Power Unit (SPU) in Grenoble. This unit, employing Ballard Power Systems' fuel cell technology, acts as a hydrogen-powered electricity generator. It is aimed at ensuring energy security for data centers, critical infrastructure, and other sensitive sites.
This SPU marks HRS's shift towards diversifying its hydrogen technology applications beyond refueling stations. The demonstrator, set to be installed in 2027 at the HRS test site in Champagnier, will validate technological aspects like hydrogen integration and control systems.
The initial SPU configuration targets a capacity of 1 MW, addressing the rising demand for reliable power solutions amid digital and strategic infrastructure growth. This development approach anticipates future scaling to multi-MW solutions for energy-intensive sectors.
