Neoen Expands Battery Storage Capacity in Australia with Western Downs Project
Neoen has commenced construction of the Western Downs Battery Stage 3 in Queensland, Australia, with a capacity of 305 MW / 1,220 MWh. This expands the company's battery storage presence in Australia to 2 GW / 6.4 GWh. Stage 2, featuring 270 MW / 540 MWh, is completed, contributing to a total capacity of 540 MW / 1,080 MWh for Stage 1 and 2. The new stage uses Tesla Megapack 2XL units and will connect to Powerlink's Western Downs substation. Stage 3 is set to operate by the summer of 2027/28.
Neoen has signed two virtual battery contracts with ENGIE for 75 MW combined, underpinned by existing stages. These agreements support grid stability and energy transition efforts in Queensland. Neoen's CEO, Xavier Barbaro, emphasized the hub's role as a model for growth and energy transition strategies.
