OHB Qualifies EMS Suit for Muscle Loss Research on ISS
OHB System AG has qualified the "EasyMotion-2" electro muscle stimulation (EMS) suits for research on the International Space Station (ISS). French ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot started the experiment to evaluate EMS's effectiveness in countering muscle atrophy in microgravity. Conducted on behalf of the German Space Agency, the study is also supported by ESA and EMS GmbH, the manufacturer of the EasyMotionSkin system.
Over six weeks, Adenot uses the EMS suit to stimulate specific muscle groups. The MyotonPRO system, also qualified by OHB, measures changes in muscle tone and condition. The project aims to scientifically validate EMS’s benefits following a successful initial test by astronaut Matthias Maurer during the "Cosmic Kiss" mission.
OHB's role extends to procuring and qualifying training equipment for future missions, contributing to more efficient astronaut training and effective countermeasures against muscle and bone loss during long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
