AI Outpaces Governance in Microsoft 365, Says ShareGate Report

ShareGate's latest State of M365 report reveals a governance crisis in Microsoft 365 environments, driven by rapid AI adoption. Over the past year, 77% of organizations faced governance incidents, with two-thirds running multiple AI tools. Yet, only 1% utilize a purpose-built governance tool. This mismatch leaves many businesses vulnerable to compliance and security issues they can't measure or control.

AI deployment, particularly with tools like Copilot, has significantly increased. However, fragmented oversight and a skills gap hinder effective AI governance. Many organizations rely on retrospective audits, with only 35% employing proactive monitoring.

The report highlights the necessity of improved tools and processes for effective governance, as 93% of organizations have adopted Copilot. Compliance concerns are increasingly affecting Microsoft 365 migrations, emphasized by 34% of organizations delaying migrations due to these issues.
