Declining birth rates in Switzerland despite a desire for children

Swiss Life has published a study revealing that despite a widespread desire for children among childless 18-45 year olds in Switzerland, the birth rate continues to decline. By 2025, it had reached a historically low level of 1.28 children per woman. However, the satisfaction rate of parents compared to that of childless individuals remains similar, although parents experience greater stress.

These declining birth rates are accompanied by an increased unpaid workload for households with children, particularly those with children under seven. Common reasons for foregoing additional children include a lack of desire, a feeling of having a complete family, and financial pressure. The challenge of balancing work and family life adds to the dilemma.
