Sysmex's PA-100 AST System: Transforming UTI Diagnosis and Treatment

Sysmex Europe SE has launched the PA-100 AST System, a tool reducing UTI diagnosis time to 15 minutes and identifying optimal antibiotics in 30 minutes. This innovation, awarded the £8 million Longitude Prize, leverages nanofluidic technology for rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), offering results in 45 minutes. This advancement allows healthcare professionals to make timely decisions, potentially improving patient outcomes.

URIs affect over 400 million people globally each year. Sysmex’s system addresses delays in diagnosis and reliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics that exacerbate antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The tool offers a sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 99%, promoting precise care while diminishing AMR risks.

Recent projections indicate that applying the PA-100 AST System in Spain's public healthcare could save approximately €323 million in the first year. The system's utility has been celebrated, most notably receiving the prestigious Longitude Prize.
