Cheongju Joins UNESCO Creative Cities Network

Cheongju, South Korea has been officially inducted as a full member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in Crafts and Folk Art. This makes it the only city in Korea selected in 2025. Mayor Lee Beom-seok announced this new status, positioning Cheongju as a global leader in K-craft. He highlighted the city's vision of connecting its 880,000 citizens to the world through crafts.

Established in 1999, the Cheongju Craft Biennale has become pivotal in the global craft scene, with the Culture Factory exemplifying a space for creative and sustainable development. This recognition underscores Cheongju’s commitment to sustainable urban growth via craftsmanship.

Membership allows Cheongju to collaborate with 408 cities across 100 countries, advancing creative industries. Plans are underway for a sustainable cultural ecosystem, supporting young craft artists in the global market. A proclamation ceremony will be held in December 2025.
