Stepstone Study Reveals Decline in Entry-Level Job Opportunities
Recent analysis by The Stepstone Group indicates a significant 45% decrease in entry-level job postings in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the five-year average. This trend marks a continued decline from the peak in 2021, impacting those entering the job market. The study, examining over four million job ads, highlights an ongoing economic challenge despite a skilled labor shortage.
University graduates are particularly affected, with a median of 40 applications needed to obtain a job interview, compared to 26 for vocational training graduates. Notably, 74% of graduates report receiving no feedback during the hiring process, a higher rate of "ghosting" than those with vocational training.
While entry-level roles in traditional administrative fields shrink, demand rises in people-focused professions, such as education and skilled trades. The analysis suggests that employers must prepare young talent with skills in AI and digital adaptation for the evolving job market.
