The Reality of Job Search for German Graduates

Entering the German job market presents challenges for recent graduates, turning initial optimism into struggle. According to a Stepstone survey, 76% of students are optimistic pre-graduation, yet 56% of young professionals find job hunting difficult. Master’s graduates average 21 weeks to secure an entry-level position, compared to 13 weeks for Bachelor's graduates.

Practical experience is crucial, but less than half of companies provide suitable entry-level roles. Despite a 73% company-reported young talent shortage, only a minority offer internships or trainee programs. Unrealistic job requirements further hinder entry; 67% of early-career respondents cite difficulty meeting these, with 71% receiving no application feedback and 54% feeling their skills are undervalued.

Dr. Christina Langer of The Stepstone Group emphasizes the need for companies to offer practical opportunities to attract young talent, crucial for securing a capable future workforce.
