Thyssenkrupp Nucera and Fraunhofer IKTS Launch SOEC Pilot Plant for Green Hydrogen

Thyssenkrupp Nucera and Fraunhofer IKTS have inaugurated the first SOEC pilot production plant in Arnstadt, opening a new chapter in green hydrogen production. This initiative aims to advance the high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) technology, which offers significant efficiencies and cost advantages over existing methods.

The pilot plant will produce electrolysis stacks with a target capacity of 8 megawatts per year, setting the foundation for large-scale industrial application. SOEC technology excels in utilizing industrial CO2, converting it into green synthesis gas alongside hydrogen, thus reinforcing decarbonization goals.

By leveraging waste heat, electricity consumption can be reduced by up to 30%. This innovative approach positions SOEC as a transformative force in the energy transition, while supporting thyssenkrupp Nucera's portfolio in hydrogen technology.
