Press release
Eiffage wins in consortium the contract to replace the steel bridge over the Kiel Canal in Germany

Eiffage, through SEH Engineering– a German subsidiary of Eiffage Métal – has secured the contract to build the new Levensau Bridge on the Kiel Canal in northern Germany, in a consortium with BEMO Tunnelling and Metrostav DIZ. The contract is worth a total €183 million (Eiffage share: €82 million).

The bridge currently in place is the oldest still spanning the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial waterway, which plays a key role in the regional economy and the European transportation network.

Having become too old and requiring raising to allow larger ships to pass through, it was decided to replace the current bridge.

The new structure will be 241 metres in length and 42 metres high and will weigh 10,000 tonnes. The steel superstructure of the bridge is characterised by prominent arches. It will be manufactured in the SEH factories in Hanover, Germany, and the Metrostav DIZ facilities in Prague, Czech Republic. BEMO Tunnelling is responsible for the civil engineering works.

The new structure will open to rail traffic in autumn 2027, and to road traffic, cyclists and pedestrians a few months later.

This new contract, following those secured for works in Magdeburg, Mülheim and Leverkusen, highlights Eiffage Métal’s expertise in the steel engineering structures market in Germany. Thanks to the recovery plan for the renovation of German infrastructure, Eiffage benefits from a dynamic activity in the country and a very good order book.
