Ellery’s Grill in Middlesex, New Jersey, has announced plans for a weeklong celebration in March 2027 to mark the establishment’s 30th anniversary. Owner John Ellery is planning a series of entertainment events, including live-band karaoke, a performance by a local band, and televised sporting events, bringing together several activities that have become part of the restaurant’s offerings over the years.

Ellery’s connection to the restaurant began when he was 18 and started working at the establishment, which was then called The Lincoln Hotel and owned by his neighbors. He later pursued careers in the boating industry and the Snap-on tool business before establishing Ellery’s Grill.

His earlier work in hospitality, retail, and customer service provided experience that he later brought into restaurant ownership. His time in the tool business also gave him an opportunity to learn about running a business with guidance from people who supported him along the way. Among those influences was his longtime mentor, the late Frank Mortillo, whom Ellery credits with providing guidance throughout different stages of his career.

Ellery recalls that early advice became part of the way he approached building his own business. “You are only as successful as the people that you are surrounded by,” Ellery says. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have incredible people by my side throughout the years. I’ve always tried to surround myself with people who can contribute, teach me, and help me continue to grow.”

That philosophy has also shaped Ellery’s approach to his staff. He credits the employees who have worked at Ellery’s Grill over the years with contributing to the restaurant’s development and day-to-day operation. As responsibilities have evolved, members of the management team have taken on an increasingly active role in running the business.

Since its establishment, Ellery’s Grill has undergone renovations and property improvements, including new tables and televisions. Moreover, it has developed alongside its surrounding community, with Ellery’s Grill supporting local public organizations, schools, youth activities, civic groups, charitable efforts, and community initiatives over the years. Ellery says those connections have remained an important part of operating a local business.

“Being part of a community means more than simply doing business there,” Ellery says. “People have given us their support for three decades, and I believe you have an obligation to give some of that support back to the people and causes around you.”

During the COVID-19 shutdown, when indoor dining was suspended, Ellery’s Grill shifted toward takeout and delivery. Ellery notes that the members of the surrounding community contributed toward the cost of those efforts, helping the restaurant continue providing meals during that period.

As the milestone approaches, operations continue to evolve. In addition to its longstanding community presence, the milestone year coincides with expanded logistical arrangements for private gatherings utilizing a nearby facility, alongside a gradual transition of day-to-day management responsibilities to the restaurant’s team members as Ellery plans for the future.

The March 2027 celebration will recognize both the anniversary of the business and the people who have contributed to its development over the years. The weeklong schedule will provide an opportunity for customers and members of the surrounding community to take part in events at the restaurant as Ellery’s Grill reaches its 30-year milestone.
