Evolution Metals Is Expanding Production as the Pentagon’s Magnet Deadline Nears (NASDAQ: EMAT)

WSW, NY, November 6th, 2026, FinanceWire

The sourcing clock is measured in days. Replacement capacity takes years. Evolution Metals has expansion equipment on site, secured non-China feedstock and factories already making magnets.

Fifty-six days remain before tighter U.S. defense sourcing rules reach into the supply chain behind rare earth magnets. The factories needed to replace restricted supply can take years to build and qualify. That gap between the procurement calendar and the manufacturing calendar is becoming one of the most consequential questions in the magnet industry.

Evolution Metals & Technologies (NASDAQ: EMAT) brings an operating factory into that gap. The U.S.-based manufacturer has received all 57 containers of equipment for a planned tenfold capacity expansion in South Korea and secured non-China neodymium supply to help feed it. With January 1, 2027 approaching, those physical milestones give its expansion a relevance that a distant production target alone cannot offer.

The industry itself has explained why. In a September assessment released on October 8, the Aerospace Industries Association warned that developing and qualifying alternative critical-material supplies takes longer than the policy deadlines allow. The countdown stands at 56 days as of November 6.

The Deadline Reaches Inside the Magnet

The applicable defense procurement clause extends restrictions on January 1 to covered materials mined, refined or separated in China, Russia, Iran or North Korea. For neodymium-iron-boron magnets, the strong permanent magnets used in compact motors, its scope reaches from mining the ingredients through finished production.

That creates a more demanding sourcing task. A factory outside China needs access to suitable materials and records establishing their origin, alongside the equipment and expertise to turn them into consistent products.

The AIA report identifies processing, refining and manufacturing capacity as key constraints for several aerospace-grade materials. It says significant new domestic processing, refining and magnet capacity for aerospace-grade applications is not expected until 2028 or later, with qualification typically adding another 12 to 24 months after material becomes available. The implication is straightforward: customers evaluating an established manufacturer can begin with products, processes and operating experience that a planned factory still has to develop.

Exceptions and nonavailability relief remain part of the procurement framework. The House-passed defense bill also proposes a different, phased sourcing regime. That proposal could alter implementation if enacted; the current clause specifies January 1. The commercial question is which manufacturers can turn alternative supply into products customers can use.

Evolution’s Equipment Has Already Arrived

On October 28, Evolution Metals confirmed that all 57 containers of additional ULVAC magnet-production equipment had reached its Pohang expansion site. Management said assembly and commissioning, the installation and testing needed to prepare equipment for production, were already under way.

The expansion targets approximately 10,000 metric tons of annual magnet capacity, compared with approximately 1,000 currently, including approximately 6,000 tons of high-performance sintered magnets once installation and commissioning are completed. Sintering uses heat to consolidate pressed powders into a solid magnet. Management says production lines of this kind can carry equipment lead times of two years or more.

The next day, Evolution announced approximately 754 metric tons of secured non-China neodymium metal supply: 42 tons already delivered, 72 pending shipment through March 2027 and 640 committed through the end of 2027. Management expects that supply to cover about half the estimated feedstock required for its $400 million to $460 million 2027 revenue guidance. Management says it continues to source from China alongside its non-China supply.

The delivered equipment and secured feedstock address two practical requirements: machinery to increase output and material to feed it. Evolution’s opportunity is to turn that industrial foundation into repeatable output and customer shipments while buyers are actively reassessing where their magnets come from.

An Army Requirement Meets an Existing Product

Evolution has also submitted a capability statement to the U.S. Army’s search for magnets used in small drone motors. One specified grade, N42SH, is already commercially produced and customer-qualified at Pohang. Evolution proposed a staged qualification process and production-lot records tracing materials from mine to magnet. The Army process remains market research, with any order dependent on procurement and application-specific qualification; Evolution enters it with a relevant product already in production.

In a market where new capacity takes years, an operating factory has something difficult to accelerate: a starting position. Evolution’s next public milestone is its December 17 operational showcase, just 15 days before January 1. Progress from delivered equipment to expanded production could make Evolution an increasingly relevant name as defense manufacturers work to close their sourcing gap.
