Mate Security Wins CyberSecurity Breakthrough Award as AI Takes on the Hardest Part of Security Response

New York, United States, October 8th, 2026, FinanceWire

Mate Security has won the “Security Response Solution of the Year” award from CyberSecurity Breakthrough in the 10th annual CyberSecurity Breakthrough Awards program, recognizing the company’s approach to using organizational context to make AI-driven security response more precise. The award comes as cybersecurity teams increasingly turn to AI to investigate threats but face a more difficult question when it comes to letting AI take action on their behalf.

There is a fundamental difference between asking an AI system to identify a suspicious event and giving it permission to respond. A mistaken investigation can waste an analyst’s time, but an overly broad response can disrupt systems, lock out employees or interfere with critical business operations. That makes response one of the most difficult areas of cybersecurity to automate.

Mate is building its platform around that distinction, combining AI agents with a Security Context Graph and a framework designed to determine when an agent can safely act.

The Risk Behind Every Response

Security teams have spent years building increasingly sophisticated detection capabilities. Modern environments can generate enormous amounts of telemetry, and AI can help analysts process that information faster. Yet the final response frequently remains dependent on a human decision because the consequences of acting incorrectly can be greater than the consequences of waiting.

Mate’s approach starts with the idea that an AI agent should understand the organization before it acts. Its Security Context Graph is designed to provide that understanding by maintaining information about asset ownership, dependencies, business criticality, privileged identities and applicable policies.

The graph is populated through Mate’s Reason Mining engine, which turns organizational data into knowledge that agents can use when investigating and responding to alerts. That context allows a security event to be considered in relation to the broader environment rather than treated as an isolated technical signal.

Precision Instead of Blanket Containment

The practical difference can be seen in how Mate approaches containment. If one session is compromised, the appropriate response may be to revoke that session rather than disable the entire account. If a particular URL is malicious, blocking that URL may be preferable to blocking an entire domain, while a compromised host may need to be isolated without taking down an entire segment.

Mate formalizes this approach through its Confidence, Precision, and Reversibility framework, or CPR. The framework evaluates how certain the agent is about its conclusion, how narrowly an action can be applied and whether the action can be undone, while also incorporating the agent’s track record on similar cases.

"CPR weighs the risk of acting against the risk of not acting. A human can decide fast, and an agent acts on its own only when acting is the safer choice," said Inbal Argov, VP Product Strategy at Mate Security, who created the CPR framework.

That philosophy changes the role of automation. Instead of assuming that every alert should trigger an immediate autonomous response, the system can distinguish between situations where acting is justified and those where human judgment remains necessary.

Trust Becomes Part of the Architecture

Asaf Wiener, co-founder and CEO of Mate Security, said the company recognized early that autonomous security would require more than AI capabilities alone.

“When we started Mate, we knew we had to build context and trust into our product,” said Asaf Wiener, co-founder and CEO of Mate Security. “Enterprises need security platforms that can not only act faster, but also make the right decisions with enough context at scale. We are answering that need and are grateful to CyberSecurity Breakthrough for this award. We will continue moving fast and stay laser-focused on our customers, as we proudly build the foundation for agentic cyberdefense in the AI era.״

That emphasis on context addresses one of the biggest barriers to autonomous security: organizations need confidence that an automated action will be appropriate for their particular environment, not merely technically valid in isolation.

The Case for Agentic Security

CyberSecurity Breakthrough managing director Steve Johansson described response as particularly challenging to automate because of the potential consequences of a mistake.

“Mate compresses multi-day MTTR to minutes with real organizational context. Response is the hardest part to automate because a wrong action can damage the entire business. From isolating a production host to revoking a shared credential, this can cost more than the incident. So most actions are routed through human approval, and that delay is costly in the age of AI-related attacks,” said Steve Johansson, managing director, CyberSecurity Breakthrough.

The 2026 awards program received thousands of nominations from organizations in more than 20 countries, marking a decade of recognition for cybersecurity innovation.

For Mate, the award reflects a broader shift in security operations. AI may already be capable of analyzing threats at machine speed, but the next challenge is giving those systems enough context to decide when speed should translate into action.
