Re:Vision Founder Dr Trevor Gray Shifts Focus to Second Opinions for Patients Unhappy With Eye Surgery Results
Auckland, New Zealand, October 13th, 2026, FinanceWire
Re:Vision strengthens its approach to post-surgical patient care as its founder focuses on second-opinion consultations and closer collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists.
Re:Vision, an Auckland-based laser eye surgery clinic, is highlighting a shift in founder Dr Trevor Gray's clinical work towards second-opinion consultations for patients dissatisfied with their cataract or laser eye surgery results. After more than three decades in ophthalmology, Dr Gray has stepped away from performing surgery to focus on patient assessments, clinical teaching and mentoring.
The development provides patients across New Zealand's North Island with an opportunity to seek further specialist assessment when their vision has not improved as expected following surgery. It also reflects Re:Vision's emphasis on improving patient outcomes through coordinated care between optometrists and ophthalmologists.
Dr Gray, who spent 20 years in the public hospital system before entering private practice, believes that effective communication between eye care professionals is essential to achieving better surgical outcomes.
“Today, the landscape is fundamentally different and unquestionably better,” Dr Gray wrote in a recent column for NZ Optics, reflecting on how collaboration between the two professions has evolved.
Re:Vision Strengthens Collaborative Eye Care
Alongside Dr Gray's second-opinion consultations, Re:Vision continues to develop shared-care relationships with optometrists across New Zealand. This approach encourages closer cooperation before and after surgery, helping patients receive consistent monitoring and follow-up support.
A key focus is identifying and managing ocular surface conditions, including dry eye, before surgical procedures. Addressing these concerns early can improve the accuracy of surgical measurements and reduce the likelihood of dissatisfaction with postoperative results.
Optometrists play an important role by managing ocular surface concerns, monitoring recovery and referring patients back to ophthalmologists when specialist intervention is required.
As part of these efforts, Re:Vision hosted a refractive surgery training day for optometrists at its Auckland clinic earlier in 2026. The session was led by Dr Gray, Re:Vision ophthalmologist Dr Mo Ziaei and charge nurse Michelle Williams.
Participating optometrists received hands-on demonstrations of refractive surgery techniques using model eyes, strengthening their understanding of surgical procedures and postoperative care.
Supporting Accessible Cataract Care in New Zealand
Beyond his work at Re:Vision, Dr Gray continues to support the ARCH Virtual Hospital run by the Aotearoa Charity Hospital Trust.
The programme provides free cataract surgery through participating surgeons for patients whose visual impairment significantly affects their daily lives but who do not meet public hospital treatment thresholds.
Optometrists often play a key role in identifying these patients and advocating for their access to treatment.
Looking ahead, Dr Gray supports stronger professional relationships through continuing education, collaborative case discussions and improved communication between optometrists and surgical specialists.
“The scalpel may initiate the change, but partnership sustains it,” Dr Gray wrote. “Our best outcomes are shared outcomes.”
With Dr Gray now concentrating on second opinions and professional education, Re:Vision continues to emphasise coordinated patient care, specialist expertise and collaboration across New Zealand's eye care community.
