Tintra Enters Deployment Phase as Founder Dickie Shearer Urges Businesses to Build for Emerging Markets
Doha, Qatar, October 12th, 2026, FinanceWire
The Tintra founder argues that companies succeed across the Global South by designing for local behaviour and trade realities, not by exporting models built elsewhere.
Tintra, the AI-native financial infrastructure company founded by Dickie Shearer, has moved beyond design and build into deployment and is now launching across Africa and beyond. The company builds banking and settlement systems tailored to how emerging markets actually operate.
Dickie Shearer, founder of Tintra, is calling on businesses and investors to rethink how they approach emerging markets. His argument is that lasting success in the Global South comes from designing around how people and businesses actually operate, not from adapting products built for other economies.
The case is timely. The World Bank’s Global Findex 2025 report found that 79 percent of adults worldwide now have an account at a bank or mobile money provider, yet 1.3 billion adults still do not, and most of them already own a mobile phone. For Shearer, that gap is less about access to technology and more about whether the products on offer actually fit people’s lives.
Limitations of Copy-and-Paste Approaches
Many companies treat emerging markets as new territory for products that already exist. Shearer sees a structural flaw in that approach. Every product carries the assumptions of the economy it was designed for, including formal employment, predictable cash flow and standardised credit histories.
Where value moves informally, seasonally or through networks built on trust, those assumptions stop holding. Shearer argues that digitising an existing model does not close the gap. It simply reproduces the mismatch faster.
The Systems That Got It Right
The strongest evidence for his argument comes from systems that grew out of emerging markets themselves. Kenya’s M-Pesa started as a tool for repaying microfinance loans by phone, then took off when customers began using it to send money to family. India’s Unified Payments Interface, launched in 2016, now processes billions of transactions a month. Brazil’s Pix, introduced by the country’s central bank in 2020, changed how millions of Brazilians pay within just a few years.
Each one succeeded by fitting the behaviour of the people using it. That, Shearer argues, is the real lesson for any business hoping to grow across the Global South.
Culture as a Strategic Advantage
Shearer frames the challenge for businesses as a single question, asking what global finance would look like if it were “designed with cultural intelligence at its core.”
In practical terms, that means treating culture as strategic insight rather than an obstacle to work around. Understanding how communities earn, save, trade and build trust becomes the starting point for product design. The businesses that do this work early, he believes, are the ones that build lasting loyalty rather than chasing short-term adoption.
Trade Between Emerging Economies
Shearer also sees a broader shift taking shape. In his view, the global financial order is becoming more multipolar, with emerging economies increasingly trading and settling directly with one another. He links that shift to financial sovereignty, as these economies build and operate more of the infrastructure they depend on. For businesses, that opens opportunities well beyond any single national market.
Building It at Tintra
That thinking underpins Tintra, the company Shearer founded, which is developing AI-native cross-border financial and settlement systems for emerging markets. Its approach centers on cultural intelligence, systems that can operate across different regulatory regimes, and trade between economies of the Global South.
Shearer is based in the Middle East and works across Africa, Asia and emerging markets. His writing on culture, finance and the Global South is published at dickieshearer.com, and more about Tintra is available at tintra.net.
For Shearer, the opportunity belongs to the companies willing to listen first. The businesses that genuinely understand the markets they serve, he argues, will be the ones best placed to grow with them.
